Should Karen Read be making so many public statements while on trial?

From daily conversations with reporters outside court hearings, to national interviews, to her own documentary, Karen Read has been outspoken about her case. This has prompted many online who follow the case to comment, and ask – is that normal? In the recently released Investigation Discovery documentary, "A Body in the Snow," Read said that speaking out was her testimony, her version of testifying. When WBZ's Kristina Rex asked Karen Read why, in light of a gag order that silences attorneys in the case , she keeps speaking out, Read said, "I have nothing to hide. I'm anxious. I want everyone to know what I know. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. That's been our mantra for three years." Experienced criminal defense attorneys tell WBZ that Read's willingness to comment publicly is extremely unusual - so unusual, in fact, that lawyer Eric Rosen was inspired to write a blog post about making public statements during trial , entitled, "Media Interviews by a Defendant: Bad Idea (in most cases)." "Every defendant wants to get this story out and have it told," Rosen said. "Media interviews especially present a very short form version of what actually happened." When asked what he tells clients who believe they should be able to speak because they are innocent, as Karen Read has said, Rosen replied, "Your story is going to change, no matter what happens, no matter how clear you are, memories get refreshed. Certain details come into focus later on. All of that, no matter how innocent you are, will come back to bite you later on, down down the line." "I'm totally against it," added defense attorney of 50 years Phil Tracy. "I don't know, she may be seeking fame and fortune because this trial is costing her an enormous amount of money." "I would never let her talk to the media. I think it might help a little, but it hurts more," he said. Tracy specifically referenced a recent Vanity Fair article in which he believes Read aligned herself with OJ Simpson . "A lot of people who might be on the jury, or in the court of opinion, they think OJ was guilty. And he got away with murder! And now she's saying, 'I'm in the same boat,'" he explained. The number one reason not to speak out while on trial, he said, is because it can backfire. In fact, in Read's retrial, special prosecutor Hank Brennan has indicated in court appearances and filings that he plans to use Read's interviews as evidence in court of a changing story. "Generally, when people think you have the right to remain silent that goes to when you're in a police investigation, if you're in a room at the police station, and you know it's what we see on TV," WBZ Legal Analyst Katherine Loftus explained. "Anything you say as a criminal defendant, anything you say to anyone, whether it's a police officer, whether it's a reporter, whether it's a civilian – anybody essentially outside of your attorney can and likely will be used against you." Read has indicated in the past that she would like to testify, but that her attorneys will make the final call. She did not testify in her first trial.

This racket-like bug zapper 'fries those pesky gnats' for $14 — it's over 40% off

Spring is upon us, and with it comes more outdoor gatherings — and the inevitable swarm of bugs. No one likes pesky flies or gnats wreaking havoc while they're at a barbecue, grilling or enjoying an evening baseball game. Now, using an old-school swatter won't do. You need something stronger and more reliable to take out insects once and for all. Allow us to introduce you to the Zap It! Mini Bug Zapper, a modern take on the swatter that instantly eliminates pests. You can get one for as little as $14 (down from $24) at Amazon, so tell those mosquitoes to watch out... Though this isn't the lowest price we've ever seen, you're scoring this mini zapper for over 40% off (within a few bucks of its best price in years). That's a heck of a bargain, especially when you consider how much money you'll save on hydrocortisone by frying the little blood-suckers before they get their proboscis into you. Note: Prices vary between colors, and the mini version in yellow is currently the least expensive. The Zap It! features an impressive 4,000-volt grid, allowing you to wipe out mosquitoes, flies, fruit flies, gnats and other pests in one swing. It's faster and more reliable than any fly trap we've used! This works both indoors and out, and it even has a built-in LED light for night use. One charge yields up to 10,000 zaps, but in case you need to power up, it's as easy as plugging it in with the included USB cable. For maximum safety, while the racket is electrified, there's triple-layer mesh to keep tiny fingers or paws safe. More than 13,000 people have heard the satisfying zap of sautéed bugs — and they're hungry for more. "Love these zappers!" exclaimed one excited executioner. "They fry those pesky gnats in one snap." "I live in Florida. In the rainy season (June, July and August), we have a serious mosquito and fruit fly problem," shared another satisfied shocker, er, shopper. "Although this one takes a couple hours to recharge, it is more powerful and efficient than the battery-operated ones. And you don't have to buy replacement batteries." "Three years later, [it's] still going strong," raved a third. "I don't think you understand the satisfaction this thing has brought me. Flies in my house are among the things that drive me the craziest, and this racket takes care of them in short order. ... It holds a charge well, so if you have to grab it unexpectedly it still has the juice to get the job done. The sizzle does it for me (I know that's awful, but I truly hate flies!)." "Some flies need to be zapped more than once, I wish it had a stay-on function," said a generally pleased buyer. "The battery lasts for a long time. I like it; I use it every day." "The flies don't stand a chance," wrote a final fan. Their one note? "[It] scares the bajeezus out of my dogs. So I usually put them in the bedroom while I'm doing the fly massacre." And for a completely hands-off option... If you have Amazon Prime, you'll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.) The reviews quoted above reflect the most recent versions at the time of publication.

Sharing workaround for Windows security update issues, Microsoft

INA - SOURCES Microsoft has shared a workaround for users affected by a known issue that blocks Windows security updates from deploying on some Windows 11 24H2 systems. As the company explained when it acknowledged the bug in December, it only occurs when installing Windows 11 from CDs and USB flash drives that also install the October 2024 or November 2024 cumulative updates. "When using media to install Windows 11, version 24H2, the device might remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates," Microsoft says. "This occurs only when the media is created to include the October 2024, or November 2024, security updates as part of the installation (these updates were released between October 8, 2024 and November 12, 2024)." However, these deployment problems do not impact security updates delivered via Windows Update and the Microsoft Update Catalog or if the installation media comes with security updates released in December 2024 or later. While Redmond said it was working on a fix, it updated the Windows release health dashboard on Thursday to tag the known issue as resolved and advise affected users to reinstall Windows 11, version 24H2, on their systems using media that includes security updates released since December 2024 to avoid experiencing these problems. "To prevent this issue, do not install Windows 11, version 24H2 using media that installs the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates," the company states.
